Herr Über Direktor!
This comes from a conversation I had with a couple of people this morning. Just who do we consider to be a good, if not Great Sri Lankan Theater?
Do we hail Steve de la Zilwa, the director of Equus as a great director even though this is the first play he’s done in ten years?
Or how about Jerome De Silva who (almost) consistently puts on good productions? But does his history of producing carbon copies of actual Broadway productions call his status as a Great Theater Director into question?
And there’s Feroz Kamardeen. He innovates and creates something new whenever he can, but has a little problem with consistency. Does he qualify?
Of course there are others like Tracy Holsinger and Indu Dharmasena who have distinguished themselves in their own special ways. We aren’t exactly spoiled for choice, but how do we define Greatness in this context? Do we even need to?
