This film received critical reviews among other critics. It has been described as an original romantic comedy, a classic they say.
I don’t think so. Sure, this movie is creative, intelligent and witty… but it seems like I’ve seen it before, in a bunch of different movies.
First off, it uses a non-linear narrative. Now that’s good if used properly, but it’s often a sign of something deeper. It has an agony aunt. This time it takes the form of a teen-aged girl who is presumably the sister of the protagonist. Then you get two random friends of said protagonist who aren’t given much of a back-story and seem to pop up aimlessly. Then you get the protagonist himself… Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who should appear in more romantic comedies (and will if he were any taller and more manly looking), but they give him a job that’s bleargh. It’s a greeting card writer! I know greeting cards have to be written, sort of, but the sugary sweet play on this job just doesn’t seem to cut it. And he is really an architect, so he’s not into the job his held for the last couple of years anyway.
Which brings me to Zooey Deschanel, an actress who has starred in many romantic roles even though looking quite normal. She brings flair to the role of Summer Finn but sadly, nothing else. She even works at the same place as Joseph. She really seems… average. It really should have been called (500) Days of Stalking.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not dissing the movie. It’s good. It’s just not original. 4 out of 5.
